1980s Bacolod City: A collapsed sugar industry, cheaper high fructose corn syrup, and widespread famine gripped a city of one million, struggling under economic hardship, Marcos-era mismanagement, corruption, natural disasters, and unrest.
A ferry accident claimed 750 lives, deepening the despair. Mayor Jose "Digoy" Montalvo responded with the first MassKara Festival on October 19, 1980, coinciding with Bacolod City's Charter Day. Its purpose: to lift spirits and showcase resilience amidst overwhelming adversity.
